2010 [competition]
Icosis were invited to submit a proposal for the design of a club house for a local rugby team. Service accommodation is positioned to the South, facing the car park, allowing the main public spaces the strongest connection with the pitch as well as the views to the Forth and beyond. Splitting these two volumes – along with the relative change in levels – allows natural light to be introduced into the heart of the building.
This simple strategy is expressed in the elemental massing of the building, creating a low key appearance to the residential street to the South and conversely a dynamic and striking look from the North. The lower floor as well as the service element of the upper floor, would be formed in an economic masonry construction. The proposed element to the north on the upper floor is a more lightweight – and light filled – structure utilising engineered timber.
