Coach House, Midlothian

2010

This project involved the renovation and conversion of a small brick out building within the grounds of a family house. The building had been used variously as a coach house, garage, and office, and our proposals sought to create a compact, energy efficient guest accommodation, including an open plan living/dining/kitchen area, a shower room and upstairs bedroom.

A new L-shaped extension wraps around 2 sides of the original building, with a simple palette of untreated larch, glass and dark grey zinc. The existing building was repointed with lime mortar, while the existing slates were carefully removed to allow for upgrading of the roof structure, before being reinstated. Internally, a new Oak clad stair was designed as a central piece of furniture, also containing a bench, storage and a desk at the upper level.
